Justice For All?
Innocent until proven guilty. That is the American way. Unless you’re poor and can’t afford a good lawyer, a woman who was raped, or a minority labeled by stereotypes. The justice system in American is broken and isn’t always fair which shouldn’t be the case considering people’s lives are at risk. Equality should be something that is highly valued in any society. Every life, by virtue of being a human life, is equal in value. No matter how young, old, weak, or poor someone may be, their life is just as worthy of respect and protection as any other. So why is it that, on more than one occasion, America’s justice system has failed to uphold this value.
Take for example the stanford rape case. In January 2015, a Stanford university student named Brock Turner sexually assaulted an unconscious woman behind a skip.They were both at a party on campus; they’d both been drinking. The victim was not a student, but was visiting Stanford to see her sister. Turner was there as a freshman. He was viewed as the poster boy for the perfect American college student. A member of Stanford’s varsity swim team with aspirations to go to the Olympics, a good image on campus, and according to a Wshigton post article, he was “baby-faced”. But he still sexually assaulted an unconscious woman behind a trash bin, regardless of his background. Turner should have faced up to 14 years in prison for his actions, but instead he served a six month jail sentence. How is that fair? How is that justified? In this case the justice system was completely disregarded. This is not the justice system being implemented. This is not justice for all.
